Board Handling

Geku Automation have just completed the installation of Finn Forest's board handling system. The Cell consists of a KR180 KUKA Robot picking various size boards from an input conveyor and placing onto an aligmnet frame.

Finn Forest are a large importing company of wood panels. Shipments of wood arrive in an untidy fashion due to transportation and are loaded onto the input conveyor of the Geku cell. The stacks can weigh up to 3 tonne. The heavy duty roller conveyors transport the variable stack to a scissor lift where it is presented to the robot. The robot uses vacuum technology to pick a single board and move to a sensor station. The system can handle any material and thickness board between 3mm-30mm. Because wood like MDF is an extremely pourous material a precision laser sensor is used to ensure that the robot has only vacuumed one board before moving on to the next stage of the cycle.

The robot triggers a label applicator and goes through a bar code check before placing the board on an output scissor lift table. Two heavy duty cylinders are used to push the board into a datum point to re-align, the robot will then continue to unload the untidy stack and rebuild. Once the input lift is empty the output lift decsends and a perfectly aligned stack of wood is presented to a strapping machine. The Automatic strapping machine inserts protectective cardboard corner pieces and a barer before before being strapped and indexed out of the cell via a chain conveyor to an operaptor fork truck pick up point.
