Mint Coin Packaging

Geku Automation have recently installed a Coin packaging automation cell inito the Royal Mint in Llantrisiant,Wales.

The cell consists of an ABB 140T robot picking coins from tracks on an input conveyor and placing them into a collector coin presentation pack located on specially designed shuttles.

Firstly, the coins are indexed along the conveyor to the robot pick area, an Omron vision camera mounted on a Festo linear drive inspects the coin on the 'head side' for the correct date, style and quality. The robot then picks the coin using vacuum suction and offers to a second Omron vision camera to inspect the 'tails side'. The second camera sends a rotational value to the robot to allow accurate placement of the coins into the presentation packs.

The entire inspection and placement cycle takes 2.5 seconds.

Any coin that does not have the correct characteristics is rejected to maintain 100% quality control.

Key Benefits:
  • Labourious task automated.
  • 100% quality assurance.
  • High production figures.
